Year 1319. The infant James, heir to the crown as successor to his father, King James II of Aragon, shows a religious inclination that the monarch disapproves of and hushes up a secret that only his confessor knows. The renunciation of the crown would mean breaking the marriage engagement with the still child princess Leonor of Castile, and could open a diplomatic crisis between the two kingdoms.

The courts of the two young fiancés are to meet in the castle of Miravet, on the Ebro, before the celebration of the wedding. During this time of waiting, disturbing events occur: the kidnapping and torture of the prince's confessor and the death in strange circumstances of one of his pages. He will not be the last victim within the walls of the fortress. A knight hospitaller with a dark past who is sent to the castle by the abbot of Santes Creus to investigate and a lady of the infanta's entourage coincide in the same task.

The fortress will witness the tensions and power struggles, the ambitions and revenge of both the great and the humble, although both will end up being dragged by the same enigma, whose revelation would cause an unprecedented scandal not only in the Hispanic kingdoms, but throughout Christendom.
