The path of Hugo von Holbeinsberg, a promising young writer in the cultural and artistic splendour of the Viennese Belle Époque, crosses that of the enigmatic Georg Kahn, a writer who hides a terrible past. Georg tries to protect Hugo from himself and the rest of the "monsters", whom society fears and rejects for their supernatural abilities. He soon discovers that he too is in danger: Hugo's older brothers work for the emperor hunting the monsters... and they want Georg Kahn dead.
