When They Come for Me, is a novel based on a true story - the death by garotte of Isidre Montpart, a young man accused of killing two girls in the Poblenou neighbourhood of Barcelona on 31^st July, 1890. It tells the story of what happened to Monpart and his executioner Nicomedes Méndez, in the months leading up to the execution. These two characters lived in the middle of the feverish atmosphere of the second industrial revolution. One is angry about the awful living conditions of factor workers; the other obsessed about perfecting his execution technique, to dignify his profession. Both are touched by love and affected by their families.
